The Court Cards
Elemental Creatures and Guardians
The court cards in the Wizards Tarot depict elemental
creatures. They are fiery, lizard-like salamanders; watery, mermaid-like
undines; airy, fairy-like sylphs; and earthy, troll- like gnomes. They rule
the natural world, and guard the students, faculty, and grounds of Mandrake
Academy.
Just as in a traditional tarot deck, each suit in the
minor arcana of the Wizards Tarot has a set of four court cards — a page,
knight, queen, and king. They represent a father, mother, son, and daughter.
The male cards are masculine, and the female cards are feminine. The men are
active, and the women are receptive.
Together, the four royal families are well suited to
reign over the four domains of tarot: the fiery kingdom of spirit, the
watery world of emotion, the airy realm of intellect, and the earthy land of
physical existence.
